Giving of Our Financial Resources
An important part of being a member of a Christian community is making a financial contribution. As Christians, we give because God has given us so much. We give out of gratitude for God’s great gifts to us. We give because we believe that through giving we offer of ourselves in service and devotion to God. We become stronger in faith, more aware of others’ needs, and we experience the joy of sharing with others in Christ.
The standard way of contributing financially to the church is by making a pledge. A pledge is an expression of intention to give a certain amount of money to the church. Once you make a pledge, usually by completing a pledge card, you will be given envelopes in which you can place your offering on a weekly or monthly basis. These envelopes serve as helpful reminders to you as a contributor and they have a unique number assigned to you for the purpose of easier bookkeeping for our church staff.
St. Mark’s is a growing parish. Wonderful things are happening and everyone can feel the excitement, camaraderie and spirit. We need all of our members to make a contribution to assure that this growth continues.
Giving money is not always easy; there are many things we could spend it on. However, our pledges are the soil out of which our community grows. They pay for the things that are the foundation of a community, the heat and electricity, our pastor and staff, curriculum for the Sunday School and building repairs.
Many people do not know how much to give or even how to decide. Rather than simply choosing a convenient amount such as $10 per week or $50 per month, we suggest that you give in proportion to what you earn. Tithing, or giving 10%, is the biblical standard of giving, but we are not asking you to tithe. What we are asking that you start thinking about giving a percentage of your income. If every family at St. Mark’s gave at least 2% of its income we would be able to a have a balanced budget and to expand some of our wonderful programs.
If you cannot give 2% this year, perhaps you could set it as a goal starting with 1.5% and increasing over time. Below you will find a percentage-giving chart that we hope will be helpful.
If you would like to make a pledge to St. Mark’s you may request a pledge card from the church office by calling the church at (781) 272-1586. You may also speak with one of the wardens, the parish treasurer or our rector on a Sunday morning. We thank you for your financial support of our community and we look forward with you to a bright future.
